Bonnie Schradel

Medicaid Legal Assistant

“If you aren’t living on the edge, you are taking up too much space.”

When Bonnie was a young child, she spent her summer vacations and lots of her time with her maternal grandparents. She especially loved hearing stories of their childhood, because it was so different from her own. As time passed, she often served as her grandmother’s caregiver while she struggled with diabetes, then breast cancer, and finally dementia. She dedicated herself to doing everything she could so that her grandmother could live in her own home for as long as possible. Unfortunately, the day came when her grandmother was no longer safe to be alone and had to become a resident in a local nursing home. Bonnie states, “I believe my relationship with my grandmother helped me to develop a love for seniors and a passion for helping them to age at home, which is where they want to be.”

She started working in a nursing home even before she graduated from high school. After she graduated, she worked in many different areas of the nursing home—activities, social services, care planning coordinator, and marketing. Bonnie did an excellent job in nursing home sales, but she always felt uncomfortable with the fact that most people really didn’t want to move there.

It was then that she met her mentor, Bette Schoenholtz, Executive Director of Senior Services Associates, Inc. This opened up a whole new world for her, in that she could now work to connect seniors with the resources that would allow them continued independence at home. She felt that it was very rewarding, and that the seniors were grateful for the assistance that was provided. Her mentor, Ms. Schoenholtz, taught her how to be a fair administrator, to understand business systems, and how to act carefully so as to achieve positive outcomes.

Bonnie brings to Law ElderLaw her vast experience in dealing with seniors throughout our local community. She is considered by many to be an expert in the area of Medicaid in the community.

Bonnie enjoys reading, being with family, and watching her young Steven “play, grow, learn, and realize his independence.” She also admits to being “a little addicted” to facebook games (and to sushi!). When she’s not working, she loves to travel with her family to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan or to the Wisconsin Dells.
