Veterans and Veteran’s Widows May Qualify for this Little Known Benefit to Help Pay the Cost of Assisted Living or In-Home Health Care
By Senior Advocate and Attorney Rick Law of Law Elderlaw in Aurora, IL Who else would like like a check for up to $2,054 from the VA? For many veterans in Illinois, the rising cost of assisted living or home health care can be staggering, causing their life savings to be eaten up by the stacks of bills that just never seem to stop coming. But did you know that there is a little-known VA benefit that can help you get the care you need without using up all of your hard-earned savings? As an Elder Law Attorney, I have spent countless hours helping people in Illinois receive quality health care while legally protecting their family’s assets. It never ceases to amaze me when I talk to the families of veterans how little they understand the VA’s benefit programs that are available to those honorably discharged veterans who are over 65 and are struggling with the cost of their care. But I was once just as clueless about this important benefit… that is, until my mentor’s widow was seeing all her assets drain away to pay for her health care. Her son, a dear friend of mine, asked me if I knew anything about this benefit. “No,” I told him. “But I’ll find out.” If you or a member of your family is an honorably discharged veteran who served at least one day during a period of wartime (the definition of “wartime” may be broader than you think), and if you are in an assisted living facility or are spending several hundred dollars a month or more on the cost of your health care, then you may qualify for benefits under the VA Aid and Attendance Pension Program.
